FOUR IN A BED REVISITED: The photos are on the One4two Facebook page. (By around 8pm each day)
Here in this Blog I am going to write a few memories of each day.
DAY 1 Monday 26/8/13.
(Not a lot happened as it was a travelling day)
Very nervous! But equally excited I packed my bags and set off in my car on the long long drive from Bude to Manchester to meet Gabby.
At this point I wish to again thank Paul for agreeing to let Gabby join me for this adventure. She was so supportive and really made the whole experience so much easier. A true friend! But at the same time we had so much fun living the "Celeb Life?" for a couple of weeks!!! (Actually I have lived it for a long time afterwards as I seemed to kept being be "spotted "."I know you! weren't you on FIAB?"
Gabby please add any comments of your own at any stage of this our story!!!
Then we set off towards Blackburn and the Hotel we were to stay at for the night. We checked into our room. After a stress relieving sherry in the room, (we got a reputation for our "bottle bag" which was carefully transported from hotel to hotel!...sorry Gabby but in most, if not all, of the subsequent photos we both have a glass in our hands!!!)) we go down to the bar to meet members of the film crew to discuss tomorrow! I vividly remember the bar staff and waitresses "earwigging" our rather loud conversations about our "Filming" tomorrow, and needless to say we were very well attended to for the rest of the evening. Had a lovely meal and then back to the room for a night cap and a good night's sleep! The next day we will meet our fellow competitors for the first time and the real filming begins....my last thoughts as I drifted off to sleep ....Oh dear what have I got myself into!!
There are only a few photos of the first days as it was obviously all new! It was a "get to know" time...but they get more interesting during the following 2 weeks as we settled into the world of TV.
Unfortunately our idea of travelling to the B&Bs in style in my car were scuppered by the fact it had the One4two logos on it and obviously they didn't want the other contestants to see where they were going in advance! Hence we were always back seat passengers when travelling /interviewed. (This fact lead to a few "cat and mouse" hide the car scenarios)
Why the last picture? The final cut of the fortnight never mentioned my true profession but they cleverly put in a clue by using my late father's figurine of a dentist in the closing titles. (He too was a Dental surgeon).
I must say every member of the crew were fabulous and I know we loved every minute of the experience. From the show I now have good friends in Colin and Liz from the Kallacliff in Newquay and still looking forward to meeting up again with Margaret and Janet from The Avenue at some point in the future.
The programme was, as you know, pulled after a couple of weeks on the repeat channels by channel 4 because I gather one couple complained. So in this series of photos I have not put up any photos in which they featured, which obviously limits the number of photos I can show.
Next: Tuesday 27th August 2013 we started filming for real!!!!!
DAY2. Tuesday 27/8/13
We were to be met at the hotel by the film crew. We were "Miked up" which as you will see in later photos caused quite a few hilarious "hands on?" episodes.
We set off with the camera operator in the front passenger seat and Gabby and myself in the back being filmed over general conversation and questions..
I am not going to say too much about each day of the programme, as you can watch that. I will just add a few facts / memories.
I feel the photos of today on the One4two Facebook page are self explanatory, so to to finish I will just add a few facts:
After each filming episodes: the arrival / in our room / an interview we were shut away in our room.
The reason for thsi is that they need continuity, so should we have conversations with the other contestants off camera, then the thread is lost!
So there is a lot of sitting around whilst each couple is filmed or interviewed.
Even at the lunch break we were ushered in separately so we donn't meet the other contestants.
For the afternoon activity we were transported in a mini bus all together. So this was the first meet with the other contestants.
Over the next few days after getting to know one another, we had to be continually reminded of no chatting, so the most frequent two words from the crew were "ZIP IT!"...This became quite a challenge for Me, Gabby and Liz ...to name but a few.
I am not going to make comments on the actual events of each day as they are featured in the programme.
So suffice it to say: It was along day of filming and many interviews but in general it went reasonably well.
Being the first day of filming of course we were all nervous, we were all unsure of ourselves but as we got to know the ropes, the crew and one another we relaxed more and everything became FUN!!!
DAY 3 Wednesday 28/8/13
Again I am not going to go over the events as they are shown in the programme.
So after an interview /filming in the bedroom it was down to Breakfast. After breakfast we returned to our room and filled out the guest book. We were then filmed saying goodbye to Margaret and Janet and leaving "The Avenue" in the crew's car. We were then taken to my car.
Gabby and I then had a 2 hour drive to our next destination hotel for the night, up near Penrith. We stopped off for a nice lunch en route.
Now at last we had a bit of time to relax, be ourselves away from the cameras and as usual once settled in the room we ended up in the hotel bar and restaurant for a lovely evening meal. (The photos say it all!)
Before I finish I should say something about "Interviews"
These occured through out the day for each B&B visit.
1Travelling to the B&B. 2 In our bedroom at the B&B. 3 After the afternoon's activity. 4 Getting ready for the evening meal. 5 After the meal. 6 Before going to sleep in our bedroom.......next day ....7 Before breakfast in our bedroom. 8 After breakfast when we filled in the guest book and put the money in the envelope........The following morning ..........9 at our hotel an overall impressions so far interview. 10 The featured B&B owner had their main interview after the other contestants left, reading the comments etc.
So with three owners to be interviewed each time this takes a while and if you are last in the evening you can be so wanting to get some sleep but you have to stay "presentable" for the cameras! Equally the afternoon post activity interviewws often were running late, giving us under 20 minutes to shower and get ready, let alone "look good" for the evenign filming and the next interview.
At the filmed evening meal a difficult situation often occurred when a very relevant comment or joke were made but the camera operator /sound didn't pickit up. So they ask us to do it agian...It is not only difficult for the person telling the story but also for the rest of us to react as though we hadn't heard it before.
A Romantic Break @ One4two
For those that don't know when guests stay for a Romantic Break at One4two they arrive to their special tune playing.
I had planned this for my fellow contestants when they came to One4two the following week, so we had to deviously and quickly, over the 2 evening meals, find out their special tunes. Thanks to the director she agreed to steer the conversation to this matter. We managed to get each couples favourite tune. She even went over the tapes that night to confirm we definitely had it right.
My thanks to her!
ps: Being a Pink Floyd fan myself I was so pleased whenI found Colin & Liz's request was for Floyd!!!
DAY 4 Thursday 29/8/13
(Photos on he One4two Facebook page)
After breakfast we were texted to drive to the film crew's hotel for the morning interview. We then got into the crew's car with cameraman in the front! We arrived at our next B&B.
After the usual filming of our arrival and greeting by the owners we were shown to our Lovely suite and filmed therein.
But little did we know what the afternoon would bring.
Although the main event was "Walking with Llamas" we did not expect a zoo! This really made the afternoon. None of which / very little was featured in the final programme. There was a falconer with several birds of prey. Owls and then the Snakes!!!! Two of the girl contestants were snake phobic but within a relatively short time one managed to touch it, whilst the other ended up with it around her neck!!...... Well done Gabby!!! Great achievements for both!!
Whilst the others were interviewed, Gabby and I souught out the falconer again. He agreed to bring out some other birds we hadn't seen.(I used to breed both Barn and Tawny owls and also had a pair of Eagle owls "Bonnie and Clyde" many years ago) so I was used to handling the birds and loved handling these, Gabby on the other hand was nervous of large birds but as you see from the photos she managed to overcome that brilliantly!! Even with a smile!!
For the evening w ewent for the most sumptous of meals in the most beautiful of locations.
After a very full day of interviews and filming it was time for bed.
Further notes on "Interviews"
1 Trying to avoid the word "Nice". ......."Yes that was good but can we do it again without so many Nices."
2 "Yes that was very good" says the director, "but can you say that again in just a few words"...... "Go!"......erm.......erm..... (Gabby help!) Gabby was such a help in these situations!!
Day 5 Friday 30/8/13
After breakfast, an interview and filling in the guest book we left the B&B in the crews car were taken back to collect my car from the hotel car park.
We were all to return to our homes for the weekend. I had planned to drive all the way from Penrith to Bude that same day but as it got late the crew arranged for me to stay just off the M5 at The Bristol Travel Lodge ( OH Dear...what a come down!!)
Gabby thought it would be nice to give me some company for part of the journey rather than catch a train. After all Manchester was "on the way". To save actually going into Manchester we arranged to meet her husband Paul at a certain venue on our route. This became complicated as there was an accident blocking our planned exit route from the motorway whichobviously led to a change in our plans but we did eventually meet up . Now I was really glad I only had to reach Bristol for my stopover.
I was very tired when I finally got to Bristol in the pouring rain. Not being a lover of "Fastfood" outlets I went into the supermarket bought a sandwich crisps and small wine and retired to my room . Very soon collapsing into bed.
Day 6 Saturday 31/8/13
I got up early as I had so much to sort out when I got back to One4two.And so I completed an uneventful final part of my journey to Bude. This was going to be the only free 36 hrs, with the help of my housekeeper Jane and Mary, to get One4two ready for "My Guests" and Film crew, for later in the week.(A member of the crew was to stay in Base4you)
It was also the time to do the recording and make up the covers of the CDs for "The Guests". At least we had been able to find out their "Special Tunes." I did one for each couple and one for Margaret and one for Janet.
Another "problem" we managed to solve, was as usual most of the breakfast was to be in their suite on arrival, so over the last week Gabby and I had watched and listened and asked appropriate questions to gather up the "likes and dislikes" of our guests.
Equally these 36 hours were at some point going to give me a few hours to totally relax. The last week had been Brilliant fun!!! But being single, living alone it was a total"Lifestyle Change" so I would have some brief solitude time to truly unwind.
BUT NOT FOR LONG!!!
Ps; Just remembered....More on those interviews: Because of copyright rules where ever we had our interviews they had to move any items eg Pictures etc that could have this restriction, but several times these could not be moved so being tall and the biggest I was usually positioned to block these items.. Unfortunately, or more likely inevitably, I would move during the interview so there was a lot of waving of hands from behind the camera or those dreaded words " Cut.... Kathy you've moved..we will have to retake!!!"
AND >>>RELAX >>>>>>
Day 7 Sunday 1/9/13
(Only 2 photos)
I had a morning to do the final tweeks for One4two before leaving to meet up with Gabby.
Gabby was to fly down from Manchester to Newquay and I would pick her up there and drive into Newquay itself for our over night stay before filming the third B&B on Monday morning.
I seem to remember that we arrived at the hotel which was in the final preparations for an evening of "Britain's (Newquay's) got Talent." We tried to get a drink in the bar but were soon made aware that if we didn't want to pay to view the show we weren't welcome we went in the garden and then had to find a round about route to get to the restaurant as all other ways were now closed for the competition!! We retreated to the restaurant for a lovely meal and then back to the room for a night cap before a good nights sleep and the filming resumed in the morning. We both were looking forward to seeing our "new friends" again and eager to see Colin & Liz's place!
Day 8 Monday 2/9/13
(Numerous photos on One4two Facebook page)
It was a short drive to Colin & Liz's "Kallacliff". What a location! Fabulous!!! After the usual filming of our "Our arrival" and "Our Room" we were again shut in our bedroom but who cared with a view like that.
Lunch followed the usual pattern and then it was time for the activity.
Many parts of the programme are stage managed but with Nature that is not possible. We were to go out on a boat in the hope of seeing a dolphin or two. Well it could not have gone better for within ten minutes of leaving the harbour we were amoungst a large pod of dolphins who stayed with us for 20 minutes or more. This was made even better when a baby was spotted, swimming right up and under, around our boat. The only downer for some was a touch of sea sickness. So the "cream tea" and champers was not accepted by all!
The day ended with a fabulous meal at a restaurant right on the beach.
We were very tired when finally the crew arrived for the filming of the "synopsis" of the day in our bedroom, and then we could turn the lights off the lights, leaving the window open to listen to the sea.
A fabulous day!
Day 9 Tuesday 3/9/13
(only 2 photos ...but just wait for tomorrows!!!)
At breakfast Gabby and I watched and listened to everyones request making sure we had everyones preferences correct for their stay at One4two, as these had to be in the suite when they arrived! After a fabulous breakfast we went back to our room for the filling in of the book and interview. We then left to get back to One4two where we were met by Jane and Mary.
We all then went over each of the One4two suites with a fine toothcomb.
At this stage I should add that I was asked to change my "modus operandi," as One4two did not fit the programme format.
I knew when I entered that my One4two was totally opposite to the usual B&B as I leave my guests alone intentially!
It's their time "Together .......... Alone"
So the score for several questions could easily be zero!
But to the crew this would mean I would hardly appear in the programme ....... So;
Usually my guests are sent with their booking confirmation very precise arrival instructions on how to operate the key safe etc (I often speak them through it on the phone when they book as well so they have no problems) But it was decided that it would be "Fun" just to text the name of the suite and a keycode with no further information ...which for Margaret and Janet...was not funny.
It was also decided by the crew that, yes most of the breakfast ingrediants would be in the suite as usual but I would deliver Fresh breads / croissants etc to each suite. (Something I never do!! being against everything that One4two stands for ..You are never disturbed!)
Usually my guests on a Romantic Break arrive to their special tune playing as they enter the suite but unfortunately because it was being filmed and obviously edited, they could not have music playing in the background.
MY BIG DAY WAS NEXT!!!!!!
Day 10 Wednesday 4/9/13
So at last the Big Day was here. This was the occasion to show my One4two to the world! You may think that sounds OTT!!!??? ... Well over the last 2 years it has proved to be totally true as I have received many emails from as far apart as Australia, America and Europe.
All supportive of my "Concept ... One4two"
I look back at the programme and think to myself Good God why did I wear that, but to be honest it wasn't me it was One4two I was showing off. I never really thought of myself. One4two was all I was thinking about at the time.
So after a very disturbed night the crew arrived early morning. The suites were all set and they went round each one in turn filming the main features of each suite. I had to stay back, in my home, away from this and actually had to stay like this all morning whilst the other couples were filmed arriving and inside their respective suites.
Lunchtime came and went. The afternoon activity had been decided by the crew to be a bit of Rock Climbing at Adventure International just off Bude High St. Something I had never done and will never do again. Definitley not me!! Whilst doing this I could see Jane my housekeeper, patients and friends all watching from a near by cafe.
The evening meal was to be at Elemnets. We arrived to a busy restaurant in action. As ever our walk in was filmed, and filmed again!
The meal was my big moment to speak about One4two to the camera and promote "My Concept".
This was the whole reason for doing "Four in a Bed". I am glad I hadn't been first up, at least by now I had experience of cameras and how it all worked, so all I had to do was get the words out clearly and hope that in the the editing "My concept" would still come across.
Which it did!
The meal went very well. We then had our interviews out on the lawn. This is where Gabby's fabulous photo being "wired" was taken.
All I can remember was trying to stay on my feet having for the first time that week worn stillettos I kept sinking into the grass.
I had confirmed with the director that we could have a dip in my personal spa with a bottle of Camel valley Brut!!
Whilst we waited in my louge for the others to put on their cossies, Colin found one of my guitars and entertained us.
As you will see from the photos" The Party" went on longer than planned and it was slightly more than one bottle that was consumed.
But it was great fun for all! I beleive one or more of the contestants felt a little bit tipsy, when they returned to their suites.
It was all done, No retakes. Just tomorrow and breakfasts to get through.
Sorry folks will have to catch up tomorrow evening as since Friday 8.15 am we have had a new large shed errected and having had all the trades in, this is now the new One4two Laundry so as you can imagine I have been rather busy!!! (and a totally new increased decking area off The Marrakech suite) so as you can magine I have been a bit busy!!!
I had to be up early to prepeare breakfast for my guests ( As I said before I never do this for my real guests, as their breakfast's of choice, are already in their suites! afterall the whole idea is my guests are left alone they do not have to get up at any special time they can take breakfast when they want, even back to bed. But for the programme I had to do this. So I rushed off down to the supermarket for the selection of breads etc that Gabby and I had found were most popular for each couple.
I was then filmed preparing the baskets and delivering to the guests.
Then they were interviewed and their departures filmed.
It was now our turn to read the guest book.
Then they wanted to film me outside the property for the opening shots. This was great fun with cars and lorries beeping and passers by calling out. It took 8 retakes to get it right (I was enjoying myself!!)
The crew then packed up and left us to sort out the suites. There was food everywhere and we had to get down to our hotel in Newquay for that evening. Also Jane had to get Lindos suite ready for Gabby's husband Paul's arrival the next day.
(To thank Gabby for giving up her time and being so supportive, I had given them a long weekend stay.)
After a long spell of dry weather the heavens opened and it poured!!!
I also had to pack another case for myself as I was to fly to Amsterdam for Roger Water's The Wall on Saturday leaving Bude at 6am.
WE did our best to tidy up but then rushed off to Newquay arriving just in time for last orders to get a lovely Mexican meal.
We returned to the same hotel we had stayed in before.
Day12 Friday 6/9/15
The table discussion was to be filmed at a hotel just down from Colin & Liz's "Kallacliff". Fabulous location down almost at beach level.
I am not going to make any comments about these discussions, other than to add that we started filming around 8.30am and after several retakes of walking into the venue (One time I remember my heel getting stuck in the decking boards!) we finally presented the Four in Bed plaque at around 9.30pm.
All that time for probably only 10 minutes of filming of the actual table discussion.
(Remember that part of the programme has a lot of looking back over the whole week)
Gabby and I said our farewells and drove in the pouring rain back to Bude. Poor Paul had been "deserted" all evening!
We had a brief drink and a chat together before I said goodnight as I had to be up at 6am to drive to Exeter airport .
To fly to Amsterdam for Roger Water's The Wall.
Did I enjoy the experience?...Without question! ................. It was Brilliant Fun!!
Would I do it again? ....Of course!!...Tomorrow??
The original 5 part programme was broadcast just before Xmas 2013. After being on the repeat channels for a couple of weeks it was suddenly withdrawn. Which meant 3 couples were very upset and despite many protestations it has not been repeated.
They did re-edit it down to an hour programme which was shown in August 2014 . We all hope that this will be repeated.
I had numerous people / strangers come upto me for months /years after the broadcast...even now!! . I had emails from as far a field as America and Australia. I was spotted by total strangers in Spain and Fuerteventura.
So was it a good move for publicity ...Of course and even 2 years on it still crops up with my guests.
All I hope is that it will be shown again !
Finally ........ again....................a massive "Thank You" to Gabby!
I can't believe it is exactly 2 years since Gabby, my friend from Manchester, and I started our adventure in taking part in the Channel 4 programme "Four in a Bed"". We had many laughs during the fortnight so I thought it would be fun to relive and share a few "Off Camera" moments. So over the next fortnight I wil post a few of the 400 personal photos I / the crew took on my behalf, of what happened on a daily basis two years ago.
Of course I have to be careful what / who appears in these photos! so most will be of me and Gabby, but I will add some other pictures, which I feel will be acceptable to some of the others involved in the programme.
You can follow this on One4two's Face Book page from tomorrow. 26/8/15.
Although The Morpheus suite is still the most popular suite @ One4two I feel it is time for a makeover.
Unlike my other suites it does not have an overall theme. It is also the smaller of my three main suites, and unfortunately does not have any direct access to any decking area like the Lindos suite or The Marrakech suite.
So I want to concentrate on The "Atmosphere"....... inside.
As many of you know I have had great fun creating The Marrakech suite with the use of deep vivid colours and bold fabrics , which although very alien to me, have created a wonderful atmospheric suite. Many of you have now experienced and enjoyed the Marrakech suite and at present is the most booked suite.
Obviously I will be keeping the Famous Morpheus Four poster bed; the spiral staircase and The Cavern bathroom the same, but I am considering the use of dark rich colours and fabrics...candle effect lights.... .leading to a slightly more "Medieval" / "Gothic" experience.......Dark ..... Moody..and of course most importantly very Romantic!!!!!
This will mean closing the suite for most of December into the New Year. So for those planning special romantic occasions in that period I am sorry but I know "The New Morpheus" will be worth waiting for!!
The Marrakech Suite.
I have plans for the autumn period to increase the decking area and have acquired some wonderful large Moroccan pots to give that area more atmosphere.
The Base4you suite "La Casa Poco"
The makeover of this suite in the spring of this year has made such a difference.
All guests are enjoying their stay in this our smaller studio suite!
But I am about to make a couple of changes (different seating in the kitchen) as suggested by guests, which should make the experience even better.

What A Little Diamond Wow... Simply Wow. My Girlfriend and I decided to have a short stay, wherever we could find, last minute. We had been searching on late rooms for hours when, by luck, we stumbled upon One4Two which had JUST been put up. It seemed no matter how many parameters we tried to filter by, it was always the top hit. Now, at this point, we're thinking, "well, this place is going to be ridiculously expensive...", but upon checking, it was by far one of the cheapest places within Cornwall. Stratton, near to Bude is a lovely little place, and is only a short drive/walk to the coast; you can see it from your window. We decided on the Aphrodite suite, and when we arrived there, we thought it was too good to be true. Not only was the place immaculate, but everything in there was luxury you usually only dream of. It became a home to us within minutes. The bed was perfect; I prefer harder matresses, whereas my girlfriend prefers softer ones, and yet, it was perfect for both of us. The bath, with jacuzzi pumps, was perfect after a day of sight seeing. The fire gave a warmth to the sitting area that could send you asleep in minutes. The TV and sound system immersed you in movies. The kitchen was more than adequately equipped to cook full 3 course meals, if you so choose. Kathy, the owner, is one of the nicest people you could meet. Not only did she go out of her way, despite her busy schedule, to help, but also to make the stay as good as it could possibly be (which, if you haven't already realised, was perfect). Bude itself is a nice place for a walk, but the coast, just off Marine Drive was where we spent a lot of our time. Having seen it in both cloud and sunshine, I can guarantee you, it is a beach you must visit. We also decided to drive to Port Isaac (where Doc Martin is filmed) which was only an hour away, and was definitely worth the trip. We also ventured to St. Ives which provided breathtaking views, delicious Ice Cream, and great little shops for taking gifts back. We were also treated to a tour of all the suites available there, and I can honestly say, they are all little bits of heaven. No matter which suite you decide to stay in, One4Two will be the base point to a holiday you will never forget.
Dear Kathy, thank you for making our 3 night stay in the Lindos Suite so lovely. We have been married for 40 years and still like to go off and spend time together for long weekends - however, I wanted to book something just a little bit special this time, as it was my husbands 65th birthday as well as our 40th anniversary, and that is how I found you. We were thrilled with the Lindos Suite with all the lovely touches and examples and mementos of your love of Lindos and Greece. We had a super time and frankly I did not want to go home on the Monday. You did me proud with your Romantic break addition and while "D" commented on the rose and petals on the bed he was secretly pleased, we have pressed the rose to remind us of our stay with you. The Bathroom was a delight and the scented candles just made it better. All in All a wonderful experience and we will be booking with you again in the very near future. Thank you once again. C&D
